OSKY CASAS from Buenos Aires - Sunday 22nd August 2010

UMI Hotel, 64 Kings Rd, Brighton

ABOUT OSKY:

Osky is hot stuff: a talented dancer of the young generation from Buenos Aires, he is quite simply a dancer everyone wants to dance with right now! The son of Oscar Casas and the grandson of a milonga organizer, Osky has been exposed to tango from an early age and can be seen dancing, performing and teaching on a daily basis in the milongas of Buenos Aires.

Osky is from the breed of dancers that excel when dancing in close embrace with limited space. He calls his style of dancing neo-milonguero; and it is subtle with a soft, yet firm embrace and footwork that is second to none.

TANGO WORKSHOPS WITH FEDERICO CIE IMPERIAL - Saturday 14th August 2010

UMI Hotel, 64 Kings Rd, Brighton

ABOUT FEDERICO:

In my teaching approach, I give a particular place to rhythm and musicality, breathing techniques, self perception and the relationship with the partner. To attain more natural movements, I implement contemporary dance techniques, I am grateful to the people who encouraged me in this respect: Esteban Moreno, Chicho Frumboli, Sandrine Navarro, Pablo Rojas, Mariana Docampo.

Tango dancer for the Cie Artefakt as well as artistic director of the Cie Imperial, the Argentine-born Federico Perea is also a tango instructor on the Réunion island, often invited to lead workshops and to take part in dance festivals in Guadeloupe, Tahiti and France.

BOHEMIAN BERLIN WEEKEND IN BRIGHTON!! 20/21 MARCH 2010

With Astrid Weiske and Mareike Focken

UMI Hotel, 64 Kings Rd, Brighton

And we've another exciting tango weekend lined up for you in March, again flying in fantastic teachers exclusively for Brighton! This weekend, with an unusual female teaching partnership from Germany (Berlin/Dusseldorf), promises cheeky workshops full of fun!!

ASTRID WEISKE

For more than 14 years Astrid has been dancing Tango Argentino and is well known in the tango communities worldwide as an excellent leading woman. She has developed strong sensitivity in leading, great creativity in improvising and playful musicality which stand out as key elements in her dance. Astrid extended her dancing also to the follower role which expanded her knowledge of the dance much more.

Since 2005 she has been teaching in Berlin at "PHYNIXtanzt" Studio, traveling as a guest teacher and followed invitations in Germany and also abroad to New York, San Francisco or Copenhagen.

Her main influence and deep understanding of tango in dancing and teaching she got from her constant studies over the years with renowned dancers like: Brigitta Winkler, Gustavo Naveira y Giselle Anne, Cecilia Gonzalez, Chicho Frumboli, Pablo Pugliese y Noel Strazza, Tomas Howlin or Homer and Christina Ladas.

Her teaching is based on awareness, analysis of natural movement in combination with her knowledge of technique, structure of the dance and awareness of connection in the couple. Creating a constant dialogue between leaders and followers who share the responsibility of listening and reacting to each other, based on a strong connection to the music.

Her exploration of the techniques of tango, from the very classical to the very experimental, leading and following, including other dance forms like contact improvisation or modern dance makes her believe that there is no "one" Tango. She believes in creative, liberating variety and connection of ideas, movements and technique by respecting the roots of Argentine Tango. She promotes that fusion to reduce borders and let people find their own expression in the dance. Students can expect that mix with encouragement, lots of personalized feedback, and a healthy dose of humor.

MAREIKE FOCKEN

Mareike Focken is one of the young talented German Tango dancers and teachers who is known for her beautiful, light and fluid dance that she combines with creative, cheeky playfullness.

In 2006 she discoverd Tango in Tiflis and was really touched by the dance and continued back in Germany her studies and as an open-minded, light-hearted and breezily person she soon found quickly her way into the world of tango.

In 2007 Mareike started teaching tango for students who are participating in the sport program at the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. In 2008 she became a part of the tango-team of the wellknown Tanzhaus NRW in Düsseldorf and teaching intensively.

Mareike learned from taking classes with known Maestros in Buenos Aires and during Tango-Festivals in Europe as well through excessive dancing in countless milongas. Her knowledge about principles of Aikido influences her understanding of power, direction and centre to analyse position, posture and movements in Tango. Her affinity to playing the piano and singing may be the second source of her insight in dynamic dancing and gives her a strong understanding of musicality.

One of her major aims in teaching tango is to keep and spread the bright and easy-going atmosphere she experienced from the beginning, encouraging trial and error, playing and laughing, interpreting every step and every pause as a great chance. Very helpful to reach these aims is highlighting the connection of the couple and hearing the music instead of learning choreographies for an audience.

EL PIBE AVELLANEDA SATURDAY 5TH - SUNDAY 6TH DECEMBER 2009

WEST PIER SUITE, UMI HOTEL, 64 KINGS RD, BRIGHTON

EL PIBE AVELLANEDA is a living legend with more than 30 years of Tango.

Very few (living) Tango dancers in the world can match his CV. Bianca begged him to send it to her and he said: how can I send you the full room of photos of 30 years of dancing in the concerts next to every single important orchestra there ever was; in every milonga of Buenos Aires and USA, Russia, France, Italy and other countries where he is extremely popular; every show he was in (and he was in all of them including Forever Tango in Broadway), all the prizes he won etc. etc.

In Russia he even danced for Putin.

He dances in a style which some define as 'milonguero' style, which is definitely performed with a great feeling for the woman, and fantastic musicality.

Here is El Pibe on youtube or have a browse for yourself:

JULY 19/20th 2008 TANGO IS MUSIC with MICHAEL LAVOCAH (UK)
With tango singer Guillermo Rozenthuler at Sun 20th milonga

Tangueros have a special music designed especially for dancing tango: tango music! Argentines sometimes say: la música me lleva - the music leads me. But what do they hear when tango music plays? In this series of workshops, we explain what's going on inside the music so that you can begin to hear the movements that the music is making. These workshops will improve your dancing, but more importantly they'll make it hugely more enjoyable and provide a platform for deepening your relationship with the music.

These workshops are (mostly) not suitable for absolute beginners.

SATURDAY 19th
  • 10:30 - 11:30 private lesson
  • 12:00 - 13:00 Workshop 1: Rhythm, Melody and Space: an introduction to the different layers of tango music. Learn how to dance to the melody with Miguel Caló and Carlos Di Sarli.
  • 13:00 - 14:00 LUNCH
  • 14:00 - 15:00 Workshop 2: Dancing to D'Arienzo. Juan D'Arienzo, the undisputed "king of the beat" is all rhythm - but the rhythms are more sophisticated than Gotan, and sometimes he even uses rhythmic effects to make melodies as well.
  • 15:00 - 15.30 BREAK
  • 15.30- 16.30 Workshop 3: Dancing to Pugliese. Pugliese's music is full of dramatic tension and this reflects in our bodies and our movements, which are contained and high in intensity!
  • 16.30 - 18:00 práctica

SUNDAY 20th
  • 4-5pm private lesson
  • 17.00-18.00 Workshop 4: Dancing to the singer. What instrument could be more expressive than the human voice? The cantor de orquesta (orchestra singer) is not backed by his orchestra but rather is integrated within it as its most expressive instrument. When he sings, we must dance to his phrasing, and his meaning. When we get this, the singer stops being in the way, and instead takes our tango to a whole new level.
  • 18:30 - 20.00 Workshop 5: Dancing to the Gotan Project: rhythm is layered too! Which layer you hear affects how you dance: learn to hear them all.
  • 20.30 - 1.00 MILONGA: DJ Michael Lavocah The Mikestro. Live performance from tango singer Guillermo Rozenthuler

Monday: private lesson available with Michael 10.30-11.30am at Brighton Natural Health Centre.
